January 21st, 2020

BERNALILLO, NEW MEXICO – Holy Smokes: Project Film (HSPF) is developing a filmmaker program with Bernalillo High School (BHS) educational departments.

Tim McCorkle – Principal BHS & Bernadette Martinez – Dean of Instruction, acting for opening scene

Integrating film into New Mexico bps curriculum in an effort to create job opportunities for their graduating students. The program promises to deliver an opportunity for High School students who are not college bound, to be eligible to join the IATSE Local 480 film union upon graduation.

Serious Grippage & Lighting of Albuquerque, NM, displays film equipment for learning experience

Each educational department within the high school has a transferable skill in the film industry. HSPF is teaching the students of BHS which skills translate and the “what else” they need to know in order to be a successful film professional. Soft skills are necessary in most jobs, but especially in film.

Hands on experience for students in film making

Understanding the basics of set-etiquette are critical to getting and keeping a job in film, such as understanding what “Quiet on set” means when an AD yells it. Knowing not to walk in front of a camera while the DP is setting up a shot. Understanding the language used on a set for safety & communication purposes, etc.

“It’s much harder to learn what you don’t know in a real-time process when it could be the difference between being hired again or not. Holy Smokes provides a safe learning environment within the Public Schooling system. Without reinventing the wheel”~Nadine Nagamatsu, Renaissance Woman and Co-Founder of Holy Smokes Project Film

First Assistant Director introducing pilot program

Holy Smokes: Project Film is designed to utilize each department in the public education system to be recognized as a part of a film studio. EG: Culinary Arts Program develops the skills a student could use for Craft Services “Crafty” on a set, Construction translates to set building, Art Class teaches the patience and skills necessary for Art Department, or Hair/Make-up.  The students get to drive the content created through the program to explore their talents and apply what they’re already learning while having fun in the process.

Students are excited to learn more about film making
